Snodon, Jug, Jug Tavern and Brandon are all former names for
the city of Winder, the county seat of Barrow County in
northeast Georgia. Encompassing nearly eleven square miles
and located forty-two miles northeast of Atlanta, Winder is
now considered an Atlanta bedroom community. It was created
along land donated for the development of a rail line.
Originally, the railroad intended to build the tracks about
four miles south of town. However, residents gave the
railroad right-of-way at a discounted price to lure the
company into building the tracks through Jug Tavern. To show
their appreciation to the railroad, the town changed its
name to honor John H. Winder, a general manager with
Seaboard Air Line. The General Assembly made the name
change official in 1893. |

While the railway generated
immediate population growth,
Winder’s small-town feel has
endured. Broad Street buildings
that once housed hardware and
general merchandise stores remain in
good condition. The Barrow County
Courthouse, the Jackson Street
commercial historic district, the
North Broad residential historic
district and the Richard B. Russell
homestead are all on the National
Register of Historic Places.
